US Embassy in India issues stern deportation warning against overstaying visas
The US has issued a strong warning to Indian nationals against overstaying visas, emphasising that doing so could lead to deportation or a permanent ban on travelling to the country in future.
In a recent advisory shared on social media, the US Embassy in India stated that any non-immigrant visa holder who stays beyond their authorised period may face serious consequences. These include removal from the country or being barred from future entry.
“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised stay, you may be deported or permanently banned from returning”, the embassy said in a post on X on Saturday.
The warning applies to all categories of temporary visas such as student, work, and tourist visas. The embassy urged travellers to strictly follow the length of stay granted to them upon arrival. Overstaying – even for a short period – can have long-term effects on one’s ability to travel to the US in the future.
This advisory is part of the Trump government's coordinated interagency efforts to enforce immigration laws more strictly and reduce visa overstays.
Indian citizens planning to travel to the US are advised to check visa terms carefully and ensure full compliance with entry conditions.
Earlier, the Trump administration had also introduced a self-deportation initiative, offering $1,000 to undocumented immigrants who opt to voluntarily leave the United States using a government app.
