‘US born babies are American’: Federal Judge halts Trump’s birthright citizenship order

A US federal judge in Boston has halted the Trump administration’s move to revoke birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented or temporary immigrant parents, calling the policy unconstitutional.
This marks the third legal setback for the executive order, even after the Supreme Court recently limited the scope of nationwide injunctions issued by lower courts.
The ruling was reportedly issued by US District Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston.
This executive order was the first one signed by President Donald Trump after he was sworn in in 2025.
A federal court had previously issued a stay on the order, with Senior Judge John Coughenour stating on Thursday that ‘This is a blatantly unconstitutional order,’ and had issued a 14-day temporary block.
To which, Trump had said that he will appeal the ruling, which blocks his order limiting birthright citizenship to babies born to US citizens and Green Card holders.
More than 20 states and civil rights groups immediately filed lawsuits challenging the order, calling it blatantly unconstitutional.
Following this, federal judges in the states of Washington, Maryland, and Massachusetts issued nationwide injunctions halting the implementation of Trump’s executive order.
