UK Polls: Gujarat-origin Shivani Raja among 26 British MPs of Indian descent

Keir Starmer’s Labour Party achieved a massive victory in the UK’s general election today, winning a staggering 411 out of 680 seats, securing a resounding bid to the British parliament.

Among the winners was Shivani Raja, a Gujarat-origin candidate from Diu.

Raja, against the populous flow, emerged victorious as a Conservative Party candidate against Labour Party’s Rajesh Agrawal, a former businessman and Deputy Mayor of London, belonging from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

She contested from the Leicester East constituency.

This triumph by the Labour Party ended the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule and bid farewell to Indian-origin Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s tenure at 10 Downing Street.

Alongside Sunak, this election saw participation from 107 candidates of Indian origin, with as many as 26 emerging victorious. These candidates will join the House of Commons as Members of Parliament.
