| Racism in UK: Sikh men attacked |
In yet another racism and hate crime against Indians abroad, a shocking video surfaced online where two Sikh men were allegedly assaulted outside a railway station in the United Kingdom’s Wolverhampton.
According to the BBC, three people were arrested on suspicion of racist attack on two SIkh men on India's Independence Day on August 15.
The British Transport Police (BTP) said it was investigating the attack, which took place at about 1.45 pm BST. They reportedly said that they “will not tolerate this sort of behaviour on the railway network”.
The incident soon sparked a rage and concern among Indian Sikh leaders.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal took to X and said he strongly condemns the horrific attack during the course of which “one Sikh’s turban was removed forcibly”.
“This racist hate crime targets the Sikh community, which always seeks Sarbat Da Bhala (the well-being of all),” he wrote.
He urged West Midlands Police and the UK Home Office to act swiftly and also appealed to external affairs minister S Jaishankar to raise this issue with the British government to ensure the safety of the Sikh diaspora.
Punjab Congress party president also took to X, “Appalled by the brutal attack on an elderly Sikh gentleman in Wolverhampton, England. This hate crime is a disturbing setback for inter-community harmony.”
“(I) Urge @MEAIndia @DrSJaishankar
ji to strongly raise this issue with the British govt, ensuring justice & safety for the Sikh community,” he added.
