Surge in online South Asian hate in US amid elections

Updated: Oct 10th, 2024

As per a new report released by Stop AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) hate, there is an alarming rise in South Asian hate in the US, and the online hate complaints surged the most in August 2024.

The report, titled “Empowered/Imperiled: The Rise of South Asian Representation and Anti-South Asian Racism”, underscores an increase in online hate, particularly in extremist spaces, from January 2023 to August 2024.

Interestingly, anti-South Asian slurs doubled, peaking in August 2024 as per the report, coinciding with the rising profiles of political figures like Kamala Harris and Usha Vance.

Findings of the report indicate that South Asians faced the highest volume of anti-Asian online slurs, accounting for 60% of slurs directed at Asian communities.

The report underscores a troubling relation between online hate and offline acts of violence. In August 2024 alone, there were 973 threats of violence against Asians, with 75% targeting South Asians.

“It is horrifying to see increasing rates of South Asian hate, especially as a backlash to the successes of individuals in our community,” said Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal in the virtual release of the report.

“As South Asian communities gain greater political representation, we are also confronting a disturbing surge in hate and violence directed toward our community,” said Congressman Ami Bera while virtual briefing.
