Indian man attacked in Ireland, alleges Indian embassy of 'no use'

As racist attacks against Indians continue to rise in Ireland, another incident has come to light just a day after the country’s Deputy Prime Minister condemned such violence.

An Indian man in Ireland shared his ordeal on Reddit. The post, shared by user Mehul3132 in the ‘IndiansInIreland’ community, detailed that on August 10 around 5.30 pm, he was attacked by three teenagers in Fairview Park, D3.

He wrote that he was heading home from the park when one of the teenagers, riding an electric scooter, kicked him in the stomach. “I tried to walk away when two more joined him and circled around me,” he said.

According to his account, the attackers without any provocation started hitting him. He fell to the ground while they continued kicking and punching him. When he tried to get up, one of them, whose face was covered with a mask, grabbed his metal water bottle and struck him above the eye, causing a deep cut. “I started bleeding heavily, and they just ran off,” he wrote.

The incident took place in a public park, but despite a few people being nearby, no one initially came to help. Eventually, two other teenagers approached him and helped him call the Garda (Irish police).

He was taken to Mater Hospital, where he initially received only a bandage for the still-bleeding wound. After waiting for five to six hours to get stitches with clothes soaked in blood he left the hospital. The next morning, he received a referral from his college GP and visited St Vincent’s Hospital, where he was given eight stitches.

He also alleged that the Indian Embassy was not offering significant assistance, stating that they simply asked him to email the details along with an FIR number.

In his post, he warned others to be careful, adding that there is little one can do to defend themselves during such attacks.

Earlier, India Day celebrations in Ireland were also postponed due to the rise in racist incidents. The Indian Consulate issued an advisory citing the increase in physical assaults against Indians and assured that it is working closely with Irish authorities.

India Day organisers and community leaders expressed disappointment over the postponement but stressed that safety remains the top priority.
