Passport privilege Indian origin woman highlights stark contrast in travel treatment

An Indian woman based in the United States made the internet abuzz after dropping a reel highlighting the ‘passport privileges’ of non-Indian passports.

According to the viral Instagram reel of Anisha Arora, a New York City resident, she missed her connecting flight from Frankfurt due to a delay.

While fellow passengers with American passports were offered stays in ‘five-star hotels’ and ‘free meals’, she was given a ‘capsule-sized’ room because of her Indian passport and lack of a Schengen visa.

“I never cared about my passport until now. My flight from Frankfurt was missed because the connecting flight got delayed,” Arora said.

“While other passengers are getting free stays at five-star hotels with free breakfast, lunch and dinner, I am stuck in this stupid capsule,” she added.

“Any other US citizen in my position would have been so happy because they just got free everything and 20 hours to explore a new country, but not me because I have an Indian passport,” she said.

While her rant went viral, it garnered mixed reactions from netizens. An Instagrammer commented, “I want to complain about the policies of the current govt, but then I remember the civic sense of my people”.

Another wrote, “Why are people angry? She is right. That’s how Indian Passport holders are treated in almost all developed countries. You don’t understand how bad it is until you come to Europe or the US”.

A user wrote, “We are only at 80th in passport ranking. If things go well, we will soon be the 100th.”

India ranks 85th on the Henley Passport Index, far below the United States, which sits at number 9.
