NRI industrialist and philanthropist Lord Swraj Paul passed away in London on Thursday evening at the age of 94. He had recently been hospitalised after falling ill, his family confirmed.

Born on February 18, 1931, in Jalandhar, Punjab, Paul moved to the UK in the 1960s for the treatment of his daughter Ambika, who later succumbed to cancer. In her memory, he established the Ambika Paul Foundation, which has supported children and youth through education and welfare programs.

Lord Paul went on to become one of Britain’s most prominent industrialists, founding the Caparo Group of industries. He was made a life peer in the UK House of Lords in 1996, where he served on several committees on trade, education, and entrepreneurship.

Beyond business, he was known for his philanthropy in education, healthcare, and conservation. He played a crucial role in saving the London Zoo, particularly supporting its children’s section, which was later renamed the Ambika Paul Children’s Zoo.

Despite personal tragedies--including the loss of his daughter Ambika, son Angad in 2015, and wife Aruna in 2022--Lord Paul continued his philanthropic mission throughout his life.

He is remembered as a pioneer who bridged business, politics, and social causes, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and service.
