Man stabbed to death by neighbour in Canada was from Surat

The Indian national who was stabbed to death in the Rockland area near Ottawa, Canada, was from Gujarat’s Surat. 

The Indian Embassy in Canada confirmed the incident early Saturday morning, stating that a suspect had been taken into custody.

Dharmesh Kathiriya, a resident of Mota Varachha area of Surat was brutally stabbed to death in Canada. On Friday, in Ontario, Canada, a neighbour attacked Dharmesh who had been living there with his wife Ravina.

The couple was washing clothes in a shared washing machine in the backyard of their home when the neighbour suddenly attacked. The assailant also attempted to attack the wife. When the husband tried to protect her, the attacker struck him again with the knife. The repeated stabbing left the victim covered in blood and he collapsed on the spot.

Originally from Nonghanvadar village in Palitana, Bhavnagar district, Vallabhbhai Kathiriya’s son Dharmesh had gone to Canada five years ago from Surat for higher studies. After completing his education, he obtained permanent residency and settled in the city of Ontario.

Dharmesh had started a small departmental store in Canada. About a year and a half ago, he came back to Surat and married Ravina. After the wedding, the newlywed couple returned to Canada and were managing their store together. However, on Friday morning, an unexpected and tragic event changed their lives.

According to sources, when the incident took place on Friday morning, Dharmesh and his wife Ravina were washing clothes in a shared washing machine in the backyard of their home when the neighbour suddenly approached them with a knife. Before the couple could understand what was happening, the neighbour launched a deadly attack on Dharmesh. The stab wound left him injured. The attacker didn’t stop there and moved forward to attack Ravina as well.

Seeing the attack on his wife, Dharmesh rushed to protect her. While trying to stop the attacker, he was stabbed again. Bleeding heavily, he collapsed on the spot. After the brutal attack, the assailant fled the scene.

In a post shared on social media, the Indian Embassy wrote, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in Rockland near Ottawa, due to stabbing. Police have stated a suspect has been taken into custody. We are in close contact through a local community association to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved kin.”
