Indians in US rush for preterm deliveries after Trump ends birthright citizenship

As soon as US President Donald Trump declared his move to end birthright citizenship, Indians were reportedly in a rush to the hospital for preterm deliveries before February 20.

On his inauguration day, Trump declared to end birthright citizenship for children born to non-citizen couples, with the deadline for termination set on January 20.

Over 10,000 Indians working in the US on H-1B visas, with many in the queue of Green Cards.

In an unusual trend, reports suggest that Indian women who are expecting a child are asking for C-sections in their eighth and ninth months of pregnancy.

Visa woes

Every year, the US issues 85,000 H-1B visas, from which, a master’s cap of 20,000 visas is reserved for the advanced US degree holders. The remaining 65,000 acquire the visa through the H-1B lottery rounds.

According to the data released by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Indian nationals received the highest number of H-1B visas or 72.3% of all the H-1B visas issued by the US for the fiscal year 2023.

An executive order passed by the Trump administration mentioned the end of birthright citizenship for children born on or after Feb 19, 2025. Any child born before this date will be barred from the order.

Notably, this order covers children who do not have at least one lawful permanent resident (green card) or US citizen parent.

Amid the hullabaloo over birthright citizenship, nearly 24 Democratic-led states and cities are reportedly challenging President Trump’s bid to end birthright citizenship in court.
