A routine taxi ride turned into an extraordinary emergency delivery in Calgary last Saturday, when a baby girl was born in the back seat of a cab just moments before reaching the hospital.

Cab driver Hardeep Singh Toor, a 4-year veteran with Checker Cabs, was responding to an urgent late-night call in extreme cold, with temperatures plunging to –23°C. Expecting a cautious drive on icy roads, Toor soon realised the situation was far more critical when a heavily pregnant woman, assisted by her companion, made her way into the cab.

With no time to wait for an ambulance, Toor drove straight toward the Peter Lougheed Centre. The journey, which usually takes around 29 minutes, was cut short as labour progressed rapidly. Just two blocks from the hospital, with the building already in sight, the woman delivered a baby girl in the back seat of the taxi.

Checker Cabs Calgary later shared the incident on Instagram, praising Toor for his calm response and steady driving despite treacherous road conditions. The company described the night as one that began routinely but ended as a moment “no one will ever forget.”

Both the mother and newborn were safely taken into hospital care. The taxi company congratulated the family and hailed Toor for helping turn a freezing winter night into what it called “a miracle”.
