Indian shopkeeper in US faces charges for assaulting kidnapping shoplifter

Indian-origin businessman is facing several charges after allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a shoplifter who stole an item from his shop in Louisville, Kentucky.

40-year-old Kaushalkumar Patel, was reportedly arrested on January 16 for chasing a shoplifter, pepper-spraying his face and anus.

The incident occurred on October 6 2024 near E-Z Super Food Mart in Louisville's Taylor-Berry neighbourhood, as per reports.

Police reportedly said that the accused shoplifter fled from the store as Patel and others chased him down in a van and pepper sprayed him in the face.

The alleged thief reportedly crawled into a yard before Patel pulled up his shorts and blasted pepper spray in his anus before forcing him into the van.

The assault did not stop here, as per reports, Patel and group took the accused thief to a garage where they allegedly punched, and kicked him.

Patel was reportedly arrested on charges of kidnapping, second-degree assault and wanton endangerment, of which he pleaded not guilty. 

He was held at Louisville Metro Detention Centre on $1,00,000 bond, as per reports. The next hearing of court is on January 24.
