Indian-origin scientist steps down as director of US National Science Foundation
Indian-origin US scientist Prof Sethuraman Panchanathan has stepped down as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), cutting short his six-year term with just over a year remaining, as per reports.
Panchanathan, who was appointed by President Donald Trump in 2020, cited his belief that he had done all he would have to advance the mission of the agency and stated it was time to pass the baton to new leadership.
During his tenure, Prof Panchanathan made contributions to research in human-centered computing, particularly in developing solutions to benefit individuals with disabilities. Under his leadership, NSF prioritised advancing the frontiers of research into the future, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity, and maintaining US global leadership in science and technology.
In one of his notable statements, Panchanathan emphasised, “Future semiconductors and microelectronics will require transdisciplinary research spanning materials, devices, and systems, as well as the engagement of the full spectrum of talent in the academic and industrial sectors.”
His resignation comes at a time when the US government faces federal budget cuts affecting agencies and the broader federal workforce.
Additionally, a major restructuring of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was announced under the Trump administration, resulting in the elimination of 2,000 positions and workforce changes globally.
