Indian-origin nurse stabbed by patient in UK

A man from Royton in Oldham was charged with attempting to murder Indian-origin nurse Achamma Cherian.

The Greater Manchester Police said that a 37-year-old man Rumon Haque from Royton in Oldham has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. He has been remanded to custody to appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

According to police, the accused stabbed Cherain, a nurse in her 50s and mother of two, working at Royal Oldham Hospital on January 11.

The victim suffered serious injuries and is still in hospital for treatment as she was stabbed by a paient with a pair of scissors in the neck at the Acute Medical Unit of the hospital.

The police have dubbed her injuries to be 'life-changing'.

Detective Superintendent Matt Walker from our Oldham district said, “Our thoughts are with the nurse as she continues to receive treatment in hospital for her injuries, and our priority remains supporting her, her family, and her colleagues at this difficult time.

“We continue to work closely with our NHS colleagues to support anyone affected by this incident."
