An Indian-origin nurse and mother of an eight-month-old baby was found burned and buried in California, days after her husband allegedly told police that US immigration agents had taken her away from their home. Her husband, Gurinder Gill, 28, has now been charged with her murder.
The victim, Jasmine Gill, 30, was reported missing by her cousin on October 4, four days after she was last seen. Investigators later discovered her remains in neighbouring El Dorado County, around 70 miles from the couple’s home in the Sacramento area.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the couple were going through a divorce and a child custody dispute when Jasmine disappeared.
Husband Allegedly Blamed US Immigration Agents
During the search for Jasmine, Gurinder allegedly told police that officers from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had taken her away from outside their Sacramento home while she was collecting the mail.
However, when detectives contacted the agency to verify the claim, they were told that no enforcement activity had taken place at the residence.
“As the investigation progressed, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance,” Sergeant Edward Igoe, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said in a statement.
The inconsistencies prompted investigators to continue examining the circumstances surrounding Jasmine’s disappearance.
Burned And Buried Remains Discovered
The investigation took a grim turn when authorities discovered burned and buried human remains in El Dorado County on October 1. The remains were later identified as those of Jasmine.
Deputies arrested Gurinder on October 14 and executed search warrants at two homes associated with him. He is being held without bail.
The case comes against the backdrop of the couple’s divorce and child custody dispute, which authorities identified as part of the circumstances surrounding Jasmine’s disappearance.
Nurse Was Fighting For A Better Future For Her Baby
Jasmine had become a registered nurse, following in her mother’s footsteps. Born in India, she had an eight-month-old son, while her mother continues to live in India, according to a GoFundMe campaign established to support the family.
The fundraiser aims to help transport Jasmine’s remains to her mother and provide support for her infant son. Supporters have raised more than $21,000.
“She was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby,” the campaign said, adding that Jasmine had been seeking a divorce and a fresh start for herself and her child.
“Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect,” the campaign added.
Gurinder has been charged with murder. The allegations against him will be subject to the criminal proceedings.
