Indian-origin New Yorker arrested for moonlighting as contractor while on state payroll

A 39-year-old Indian-origin man named Mehul Goswami has been arrested in New York on charges of grand larceny after allegedly working two full-time jobs simultaneously one for the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) and another for GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor firm based in Malta, New York.
A joint probe conducted by the New York State Inspector General’s Office and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office found that Goswami’s actions led to the misuse of approximately $50,000 in taxpayer funds.
Investigators said Goswami was employed full-time by the state agency and working remotely, but from March 2022, he allegedly began taking on a second full-time role with GlobalFoundries during his regular state working hours.
The investigation was launched after an anonymous tip alerted authorities that Goswami was working for a private employer while still being paid by the state.
Inspector General Lucy Lang condemned the alleged misconduct, saying that public employees are expected to act with honesty and dedication. She described Goswami’s actions as a “serious breach of public trust” and an “abuse of taxpayer resources.”
Goswami was taken into custody by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office on October 15 and charged with grand larceny in the second degree, a Class C felony in New York. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
