An Indian-origin man, 42-year-old Gaurav Kundi, is reportedly on life support at the Royal Adelaide Hospital after a police encounter in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs resulted in severe brain and neck injuries.
According to local media reports, the incident occurred on Payneham Road when local police approached Kundi and his wife, Amritpal Kaur, mistaking their loud argument for a domestic violence situation. Kaur later stated that the misunderstanding led officers to respond with unnecessary aggression.
It has been reported that Kundi, who was intoxicated at the time, had pushed his wife during the argument. Police allegedly interpreted this as a physical assault, prompting them to intervene.
During the arrest, officers reportedly forced Kundi to the ground and restrained him, when his head was struck against a patrol car and the road.
Kaur, who was initially recording the incident on her phone, reportedly stopped filming when the situation became distressing.
He was then transported to the hospital, where doctors informed the family that he had suffered extensive brain damage and serious injuries to his neck.
The man’s condition remains critical, and medical staff have reportedly indicated that his recovery is uncertain.
