Indian-origin man dies at Canada hospital after eight-hour-wait, family raises questions

An Indian-origin man died in a Canadian hospital after waiting for eight hours, raising serious concerns about emergency healthcare in the country.

Prashant Sreekumar, 44, fell ill at work on December 22 in Edmonton, Canada, and complained of severe chest pain.  A family quickly took him to Grey Nuns Community Hospital for assistance.

Upon arrival, Prashant was checked in at the emergency desk and asked to sit in the waiting area. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, soon arrived and found his son in a state of significant distress. Prashant reportedly expressed to his father that he was unable to tolerate the pain.

The family claims that Prashant informed hospital staff about the severity of his pain, but after performing an electrocardiogram (ECG), the doctors allegedly found nothing serious and told him to continue waiting.

As the hours passed, Prashant's condition did not improve, and his blood pressure increased. Hospital staff provided him with Tylenol for pain relief, but his father stated that it was ineffective. Prashant was asked to wait longer, and despite receiving medication, he showed no signs of improvement.

After more than eight hours, he was finally taken in for treatment. However, just seconds after sitting down, he stood up, clutched his chest, and collapsed. Medical staff attempted to resuscitate him, but he ultimately died from a suspected heart attack.

Prashant is survived by his wife and three children, aged 3, 10, and 14. The hospital, operated by Covenant Health, stated that it cannot comment on individual cases but confirmed that the death is under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
