A Canadian police investigation has led to the arrest of two Indian-origin people after the body of a newborn baby was found in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Police said they began searching for a missing newborn on Friday after a 23-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital in a serious, life threatening condition. Medical staff suspected she had recently given birth, but the baby was not found.
Halifax Regional Police launched a search operation and initially took four people, known to the woman, into custody for questioning. Later, based on new information, police searched a wooded area in Halifax where they found the remains of the newborn baby, as per reports.
Two people have been formally charged in the case. They were identified as 23-year-old Sukhpreet Singh, a relative of the woman, and his wife, 26-year-old Ramandeep Kaur as per reports. They face charges including concealing the body of a child, obstruction, and indignity to human remains.
Police have not confirmed where the baby was born. An autopsy will be conducted by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service (NSMES) to determine the cause and manner of death. The 23-year-old woman remains in hospital in critical condition.
