Indian-origin Canadian racially abused

Another day, another Indian-origin abroad has been subjected to racism.

Taking to social media platform X on Wednesday, a Canadian citizen of Indian origin, Ashwin Annamalai, shared a video of a heated encounter with a woman who claimed to be a local.

The incident took place in Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario province, as per the post on X.

In the video seen by more than 16 lakh people, the woman approaches Annamali who is shooting the video. The confrontation escalates and the woman racially abuses Annamalai by calling him an ‘Indian’, despite numerous claims made by him to contradict her.

She continues her rant by hurling abuses at Annamalai, associating him with the Indian community, who she claims are “taking over Canada”.

Captioning this video, Annamali said, “The once welcoming community of Kitchener-Waterloo has seen a disturbing rise in hate, particularly against people of colour. Here’s a personal account of what I experienced today: A random woman gave me the finger & spewed hate while I was out for a walk”.

She eventually ends up exiting the heated exchange.

While many came out in support of Annamalai on the platform, many sided with the woman, deeming her actions as justified.

“Why are you following her? She is obviously agitated and as well as being old she may not be all there! Maybe having a bit of an episode! It’s just words bro. You got this old girl all worked up for what? Honest question: What happened before you started rolling the video?” a user asked Annamalai defending the woman’s demeanour.
