Indian medical student faces racism in Georgia deported without explanation

An Indian medical student was left traumatised after he was allegedly "handcuffed, physically assaulted, and deported without explanation" from Georgia in July 2025.

The Wire reported that Suman was studying medicine in Georgia before his dreams were shattered, "just because of his skin colour".

Meera’s son Suman faced nearly three years of bureaucratic struggles in Georgia, repeatedly renewing visas, TRCs, and university documents for his medical studies.

The family even hired a lawyer to manage the complex process. Then, without warning, Suman was violently detained—arrested by plainclothes officers, mocked for his skin colour, tightly handcuffed, denied water, and spat on. After two days in custody, he was deported, with officials citing minor paperwork errors as justification.

A lawyer also claimed ‘unspoken racial profiling’ in EU migration policies.

As per him, while white travellers pass freely through immigration, brown and Black people are targeted, detained, and deported.

Indian students in Georgia

Georgia, the United States, has been a hotspot for Indians to study medicine due to its affordable tuition fees.

The number of Indian students studying medicine in Georgia has risen significantly in recent years, with estimates ranging from 12,000 to 16,000 by 2024, according to The Indian Express.
