Indian man indicted in US after high-speed chase crash kills pregnant teen, unborn child

A 33-year-old Indian man has been indicted on multiple felony charges in the United States after a high-speed police chase ended in a crash that killed a pregnant teenager and her unborn child, authorities said.
The accused, Tarsem Singh, allegedly fled from police in Ohio while driving at speeds exceeding 120 mph after initially being clocked at around 100 mph by a deputy.
According to officials, the pursuit ended when his vehicle collided head-on with a Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the Jeep sustained injuries but remained conscious.
A 17-year-old passenger in Singh’s vehicle, Ashlee Holmes, was ejected from the SUV during the crash and was declared dead at the scene. She was pregnant, and her unborn child also did not survive, authorities said.
Singh sustained injuries and was airlifted to the hospital for treatment before being taken into custody.
He was indicted on March 23 on charges including two counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of reckless homicide, vehicular assault and failure to comply with a police officer’s signal.
Singh appeared before a court in Darke County via video link earlier this week, where the charges were formally read out with the assistance of an interpreter. He has pleaded not guilty, reports said.
Authorities have set his bond at $1 million and confirmed that an immigration detainer has been lodged against him, which could lead to deportation proceedings if he is convicted.
His next court hearing is scheduled for April 3, officials said.
