Indian man arrested in US after shooting wife, three relatives dead, kids hide in closet

An Indian man was arrested in the United States after allegedly shooting his wife and three relatives dead in what reports show was a domestic dispute. As per reports, three children, including the accused’s 12-year-old child, survived the incident after they hid in a closet.

The accused has been identified as Vijay Kumar, 51. The victims have been identified as his wife, Meemu Dogra, 43, and their relatives Gourav Kumar, 33, Nidhi Chander, 37, and Harish Chander, 38. As per reports.

The shooting was reported to police around 2.30am on Friday at a residence in the 1000 block of Brook Ivy Court in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Officers responding to the call found four adults inside the home with fatal gunshot wounds.

Kumar’s vehicle was still parked in the driveway, prompting a search of the surrounding area. A K-9 unit later tracked him to a nearby woodline, where he was taken into custody.

Investigators revealed that Kumar and Dogra’s child called 911,   enabling officers to reach the scene within minutes. The children were unharmed and were later taken into the care of a family member.

According to reports, an argument first broke out between Kumar and Dogra at their home in Atlanta. The couple then travelled with their child to the Brook Ivy Court residence, where Gourav Kumar, Nidhi Chander, and Harish Chander lived along with two minors aged 7 and 10. The shooting occurred there.

The Gwinnett County Police formally identified the victims as Meemu Dogra of Atlanta and Gourav Kumar, Nidhi Chander, and Harish Chander, all residents of Lawrenceville.

Vijay Kumar has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, four counts of malice murder, one count of cruelty to children in the first degree, and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

Reacting to the incident, the Indian Mission in Atlanta said it was extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family. “We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute in which an Indian national was among the victims. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family,” the mission said in a post on X.
