‘Indian govt is cheap, hasn’t been good ally to US’: Nikki Haley’s son on X

Nalin Haley, son of former U.S. Ambassador and Republican political leader Nikki Haley, finds himself amid a fresh controversy after he allegedly criticised India’s role in global diplomacy and its relationship with the United States. His remarks, posted on platform X, triggered widespread online debate and sharp reactions from commentators on both sides of the political spectrum.
The 24-year old reportedly stated that India has not been a good 'ally’ to America. He said, “They send cheap labour to the US and buy cheap oil from Iran and cheap weapons from Russia because they have a cheap government. And it’s not just India. The United States needs to reevaluate their relationship with a lot of ‘allies’”.
The post came in response to a resurfaced video of Republican politician Vivek Ramaswamy, in which he had spoken favourably about strengthening US–India relations as part of a broader effort to pivot away from China.
This is not the first time Haley has expressed controversial remarks. Over the past year, he has reportedly expressed strong opinions on immigration policy, including a proposal to end the H-1B skilled worker visa program, which has long been supported by many Indian professionals and businesses in the United States.
Critics have pointed out the irony of his position, given his own Indian heritage—his grandfather immigrated to the US from Punjab decades ago.
Online responses have been deeply divided. Some social media users condemned his language as insensitive and counterproductive, arguing that his comments misrepresent India’s complex role in global diplomacy and could widen misunderstandings between communities.
Others defended his right to voice a strong opinion, framing it as part of a broader debate over U.S. foreign policy and immigration.
