Indian-American lawyer Neal Katyal played a key role in a major US Supreme Court case that blocked US President Donald Trump’s global tariffs. The Supreme Court gave a 6–3 decision, saying only Congress, not the president, has the power to impose taxes.

Katyal represented a group of small businesses that had challenged the tariffs. After the ruling, he called it a “complete victory” and said the decision protects the US Constitution and the rule of law.

The case focused on tariffs that Trump had imposed using emergency powers. These included “reciprocal tariffs” on many countries. The court said the president had gone beyond his legal limits. Experts say this ruling is a big legal setback for Trump and an important reminder that executive power has limits.

Neal Katyal is a respected Supreme Court lawyer in the US. He earlier served as Acting Solicitor General under Barack Obama. He has argued many important cases, including election and constitutional law disputes.

Katyal was born in Chicago to Indian immigrant parents. He studied at Dartmouth college and later at Yale Law School. Early in his career, he also worked on the famous election case involving Al Gore.

Today, Katyal teaches law at Georgetown University and works as a partner at an international law firm. He is widely known for his work on constitutional law, national security, and limits on presidential power.
