In a notable diplomatic move, the Narendra Modi government has reportedly chosen former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh. The appointment, subject to approval from Dhaka, would mark a rare instance of a senior political figure being posted to a key neighbouring country.

Trivedi, a former MP from Barrackpore and now associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, is expected to succeed Pranay Verma, who is likely to take up a new role as India’s ambassador to the European Union in Brussels.

A seasoned politician, Trivedi previously served as Railway Minister and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare during the UPA era while he was a member of the Trinamool Congress. He later left the party in 2021 and joined the BJP.

His potential appointment comes at a time when India and Bangladesh are working to stabilise relations following a period of strain. Political developments in Dhaka, including the exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and subsequent internal challenges, have impacted bilateral ties.

The decision is being viewed as a signal that New Delhi may increasingly deploy experienced political leaders, alongside career diplomats, in strategically important postings. It also reflects a broader approach of assigning senior figures to manage complex regional relationships.

India has previously appointed non-career diplomats to key roles, such as former Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag, who served as High Commissioner to Seychelles from 2019 to 2022.

Trivedi’s nomination suggests a more hands-on diplomatic strategy in the neighbourhood, with an emphasis on political experience in navigating sensitive bilateral issues.
