The partners of the IELTS have announced that the paper-based IELTS exam will be phased out globally by mid-2026, with all tests transitioning to a computer-based format. The exact timeline will vary across different countries.

The move comes after recent evaluations showed that test takers reported higher satisfaction with IELTS on computers, highlighting benefits such as convenience, quicker results, and the availability of the One Skill Retake option.

To accommodate candidates who prefer handwriting, IELTS will introduce a ‘Writing on Paper’ option in selected markets. This will allow test takers to complete the Writing section by hand while taking the rest of the exam on a computer.

IELTS clarified that this transition does not change the test format, skills assessed, or scoring system. The exam will continue to maintain its global standards of quality, security, and reliability. Research conducted by IELTS has confirmed that scores remain comparable across formats, ensuring fairness for all candidates.

The organisation also confirmed that existing paper-based test results will remain valid for two years, as per current guidelines.

For candidates taking IELTS as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK Visas & Immigration, the exam will now be available only in a fully digital format.

Additionally, the One Skill Retake feature will be extended to the ‘Writing on Paper’ option. However, candidates must retake the test in the same format as their original attempt.

IELTS will continue to offer Access Arrangements, including large print, braille, and lip-reading support, ensuring inclusivity for all test takers.

This shift marks a significant step in IELTS’ move towards modern, digital-first testing, while still offering limited flexibility for candidates who prefer traditional writing methods.
