Housing crunch, job market woes trigger ‘reverse migration’ in Canada
A large number of Gujarati students are returning to their homeland from Canada

Gujaratis rank second in terms of migration to Canada, followed closely by those from Punjab. Despite spending over ₹40 lakhs in pursuit of a better standard of living and employment, Gujaratis are facing the harsh reality of the country.
Due to the high cost of living, lack of jobs, and housing shortages, the trend of ‘reverse migration’ is significantly growing among Gujarati students.
A large number of Gujarati students are returning to their homeland from Canada.
Every year, around 2,50,000 Indian students land in Canada. However, a lot of the students are not fully aware of the housing shortages and employment crises.
Canada has 3,45,000 fewer houses than required for its population, as per official data.
Indian students often have to reside in congested cellars after paying decent amounts.
In 2023, a total of 10,40,985 students were studying in Canada, out of which 4,87,000 were of Indian origin.
