Amid several cases of assaults on Indians in foreign lands, another case surfaced from the US’s North Carolina, where Gujarati-origin Satyen Naik was shot dead by an American man trespassing into his motel.

Hailing from Sonwadi, Navsari, 46-year-old Naik ran a motel ‘Hostess House’ in the state’s Newport town, as per reports.

On the morning of Dec 6, Naik found a room locked from the inside while he was heading towards one of his rooms. He knocked at the door several times but the guest did not open. Following which Naik used his spare key to unlock the room.

As soon as he opened the door, Naik was shot directly at by the suspect, reportedly identified as an individual named Troy Kellum by the Newport police.

It is reported that police arrived at the scene after being tipped off by a trespasser, followed by the sound of a gunshot at the motel.

The police had reportedly barricaded the area over a standoff with the suspect.

Kellum, however, shot himself and committed suicide when confronted with a police ambush in his hideout room, as per reports.

Naik, inflicted with a gunshot, died at the hospital, said the Newport police chief, as per reports. The Gujarati-origin man ran a motel in the town, owned and operated by his family members, added the chief, as per reports.

The 59-year-old accused is reportedly suspected to have been a homeless person from a nearby county.
