Gujarat govt teacher who moved to US 8 years ago, still on payroll

Updated: Aug 9th, 2024

A head teacher at a government primary school in Banaskantha, Gujarat, who has moved to the US, has been allegedly receiving salary from the state government for the past eight years.

In Panchha village of Banaskantha’s Danta taluka, Bhavna Patel is still listed as a teacher in the school payroll, despite moving to the US eight years ago.

The allegations suggest that despite living abroad, Patel, who holds a Green Card, returns to Gujarat once a year and still receives a substantial salary.

In-charge school principal Parul Mehta claimed that she reported the matter to the taluka education officer, district education officer, and the state education minister. However, no action was taken against the teacher.

According to students and villagers, the teacher has not been seen at the school for many years. The children, who are currently in the fifth grade, mentioned that they last saw her when they were in third grade.
