The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced an automatic extension of the validity of Green Cards to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90 application to replace permanent resident card. This comes into effect from September 10.

Previously, receipt notices for Form I-90 provided a 24-month extension. Now, individuals who properly file for renewal of an expiring or expired Green Card can benefit from a 36-month extension from the expiration date listed on their current card. USCIS began issuing amended receipt notices for pending Form I-90 applications on September 10.

These receipt notices serve as proof of continued lawful permanent resident status and employment authorisation, allowing Green Card holders to maintain their rights while awaiting their renewed cards. This change is particularly beneficial for those facing longer processing times.

If you no longer possess your Green Card and need evidence of your status while waiting for a replacement, you can request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office through the USCIS Contact Center.

Additionally, it's important to note that USCIS published new editions of most forms on April 1, 2024. If you downloaded or printed any forms before this date, ensure you verify the current edition, as older versions will not be accepted.

When do you need to replace your Green Card?

- If you received your card before turning 14 and have since turned 14 (unless your card expires before your 16th birthday).

- Your Green Card has expired or will expire in the next six months.

- You are a permanent resident now taking up commuter status.

- Your status has been automatically converted to permanent resident status.

- You have an older version of the noncitizen registration card (e.g., USCIS Form AR-3, AR-103, or I-151) that needs to be replaced with a current Green Card.
