23-year-old Tushar Kumar became the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the UK after taking charge as Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council on May 13. A week later, his mother Parveen Rani was elected as the Mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council on May 20.

The family, originally from Haryana’s Rohtak, has achieved a rare political milestone in the United Kingdom after a mother and son were elected as mayors in two different British councils within one week. The achievement has brought attention to the growing participation of Indian-origin families in British public life.

Parveen Rani also achieved a major milestone by becoming the first Indian-origin Mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council. Before taking charge as mayor, she reportedly held several important civic positions, including Cabinet Member for Streetscene, Parks, Leisure and Culture, deputy mayor of Hertsmere, and Global Envoy for Film and Television.

Before entering politics, Parveen reportedly worked in the field of education for several years. She reportedly served as Director of London College of Business Sciences from 2012 to 2019, Director at Kingsmead School, and Head Teacher at Creative Tutors. According to the family, she has remained actively involved in community service, education and cultural programmes.

Tushar Kumar in British politics

Her son, Tushar Kumar entered public life at a young age and became a councillor at the age of 20 while studying in London. He joined the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council in 2023 and later served as deputy mayor before becoming mayor this year. His election made him the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom. He graduated from King's College London with a degree in politics. He is expected to begin his master’s studies later this year.

Both Tushar and Parveen contested local elections for the first time in 2023 and were elected councillors. Their victories are being seen as an important achievement for the Indian-origin community in Britain and reflect increasing participation of Indians in local governance.
