Canada plans to issue 437,000 study permits in 2025, marking a 10% decrease from the previous year, according to a statement from the immigration ministry released on Friday.

Following this new statement, Indian students who are planning for Canada may face difficulties.

The country first imposed a cap on international student permits in 2024 after increasing numbers was linked to exacerbating the housing crisis.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in March, had previously committed to reducing immigration levels, especially after public opinion shifted to show less support for increased immigration.

In 2023, Canada issued over 650,000 study permits, raising the number of international students in the country to more than one million, nearly three times the number from a decade ago.

This surge in population, largely driven by immigration, has placed considerable strain on services such as healthcare, education, and housing, while also pushing housing costs higher.

Despite these challenges, international students contribute to Canada’s economy, particularly through higher tuition fees compared to domestic students.
