Canada expands express entry categories for 2025 to address labour shortages
Canada is set to introduce significant changes to its Express Entry system in 2025 to tackle rising labor shortages in key sectors. The Canadian government emphasized that the growing demand for workers is vital to the nation's economic development, making immigration essential.
One of the major updates includes the introduction of a new Education category in the selection process for federal economic immigrants. This change aims to meet Canada's long-term workforce needs by granting permanent residency to individuals with prior work experience in the country, while also inviting skilled professionals from abroad.
Earlier in the starting of the year, Canada had cut down the student permit visa by 10%, with plans to issue 4,37,000 study permits in 2025, marking a 10% decrease from the previous year, according to a statement from the immigration ministry.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in March, had previously committed to reducing immigration levels, especially after public opinion shifted to show less support for increased immigration.
In 2023, Canada issued over 6,50,000 study permits, raising the number of international students in the country to more than one million, nearly three times the number from a decade ago.
