Canada cuts PR immigration by 21%, Indians in distress
Updated: Oct 25th, 2024
Canada’s permanent residency (PR) dream for Indians seems far-fetched as Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s government has reduced immigration targets by 21%.
Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) on Thursday announced immigration levels plan 2025-27 and said, “This immigration policy is essential for the economic success and development of our country.”
Canada has reduced its PR immigration targets from 5,00,000 down to 3,95,000 in 2025; to 3,80,000 in 2026; and setting a target of 3,65,000 in 2027.
“These lower PR targets are expected to reduce the housing supply gap by about 6,70,000 units by the end of 2027,” he added.
Canada’s national statistics agency reported that the country’s population is expected to increase by 3.2% from 2023 to 2024, marking the largest annual growth since 1957.
The population has now reached 4,10,00,000, with incoming immigrants contributing to this growth. This decision by the Canadian government will make it more challenging for immigrants to find jobs and settle in the country.
Earlier, PM Trudeau had mentioned, “We are going to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers in Canada. We are introducing stricter regulations for companies to prove why they cannot prioritise Canadian workers first.”
