The tenants of Labour Party's newly elected Indian-origin MP Jas Athwal in UK have been reportedly going through a series of problems in the rented property with moulds and ant infestations.

The London Renters Union (LRU) on X, said, “Athwal MP is a landlord with 15 properties and he ignored complaints about toxic moulds. One of his tenants was threatened with eviction by an estate agent for complaining.”

The union, which has 7,000 members throughout the capital, has also sent a letter to Ilford’s Redbridge Council, urging them to investigate their former leader for alleged ‘housing law violations’.

According to Councillor Paul Canal, a leader at Redbridge Conservative Group, “The revelations that Jas Athwal MP has housed vulnerable tenants in ant-infested mouldy flats are a disgrace.”

“His failure to register his properties under a scheme he brought in is simply scandalous hypocrisy,” said Canal.

Canal also called for a code of conduct investigation into numerous breaches of the Redbridge Council code of conduct.

Jas Athwal’s take on issue

After the BBC investigation revealed the vulnerable conditions of tenants in his flats, Athwal wrote on X, “I am shocked and sickened by the series of problems that have come to light. I had not been aware of these issues until this week, for which I am furious. I have immediately dismissed the managing agent of my properties.”

As per his tweet, he will be reimbursing every tenant and promised ‘comfortable homes’ with repair works to the problem.
