The Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) inaugurated the Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey, in the USA.
The temple, inaugurated on Oct 8, is considered to be the largest Hindu temple in the United States and includes worship places for several deities.
The inauguration ceremony of the temple
The inauguration ceremonies commenced on Sept 30 as part of the ‘Festival of Inspirations’, which has been taking place for the last 75 days.
The temple was inaugurated on the 90th birthday of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual guru of the BAPS organisation.
Along with several leaders of the BAPS community, US congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland, governor John Carney of Delaware, and Randhir Jaiswal, consul general of India in New York, were the ones addressing the ceremony.
Akshardham Temple’s structure
The Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville has been built using stones exported from Italy, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. Nearly 12,500 volunteers were involved in its construction.
The temple has been architectured around the preachings of several BAPS leaders. The construction of the temple started in 2011, and took nearly 12 years.
The temple consists of 13 worship places of various Hindu deities.
The temple has also instituted quotes from world leaders and preachers like Abraham Lincoln, former US president; Confucius, a Chinese philosopher; Buddha, the religious head of Buddhism; Mirabai, an Indian poet; Martin Luther King Jr, a US revolutionary; and several others in its ‘Wisdom Plinth’.
