Australia to limit international students to 2.7 lakh in 2025

Updated: Aug 27th, 2024

The Australian education minister Jason Clare announced today that the government will set up a National Planning Level (NPL) for new international student commencements of 2,70,000 for calendar year 2025.

This may result in limits on the number of international students that can be enrolled by international education providers.

After 2020-2022, the post Covid era, 2023 saw a huge inflow of visitors, including students and highly skilled professionals to Australia. In 2023 alone, 6 lakh visitors came to Australia under various categories, according to Australian Consul General in Mumbai Paul Murphy.

Minister Clare stated that the caps are a larger effort by the government to limit the influx of international students following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Indians in Australia

According to the Indian High Commission in Canberra, the number of Indian students enrolled for studying in Australia is estimated at around 1,20,277 as of August 2023, making Indian students the second largest cohort of foreign students in Australia.

In a span of 18 years, between 2005 and 2013, 2.5 lakh students from India came to Australia for higher studies. But in the last 1.5 years, over 2 lakh Indian students came to Australia, the Consul General said.

“Today’s announcement on international student caps is the result of Labor’s immigration chaos which has placed unprecedented cost-of-living and housing pressures on Australians,” said Senator Sarah Henderson, shadow minister for education.

As per the press release, the new system will be applicable from January 1, 2025.
