Amid an ongoing review of post-study work visa restrictions on bringing along dependents on government-funded scholarships, the number of Indian students applying to universities in Britain has fallen by 4%.

According to the latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), the number of international students taking undergraduate courses has increased by 0.7%.

However, applications from Nigerian students have also dropped, by 46% to 1,590.

The number of Indian student applications has fallen by 4% to 8,770.

The statistics further revealed that the applications from Chinese students have increased by 3%, while those from Turkish and Canadian students have increased by 37% and 14%, respectively.

In December last year, the British government raised the bar for people eligible to apply for skilled worker visas in the United Kingdom.

It was also announced that international students in the UK will no longer be permitted to bring dependents on their student visas from January 2024 unless they are enrolled in a postgraduate research programme at universities in the UK.

Notably, the independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been commissioned by the home office to review the post-study work visa.
