Four IITs secure spots in World’s top 50 universities

India has achieved a major milestone in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) breaking into the global top 50 for the first time, highlighting the country’s rising academic strength on the world stage.
Leading the charge is Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, which secured an impressive 36th rank globally, followed by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay at 42nd position. Two more IITs — Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur — also entered the elite bracket, ranking 62nd and 64th respectively, placing them just outside the top 50 but reinforcing India’s strong presence among the world’s best institutions.
Overall, India has recorded its best-ever performance, with 54 universities featured in the rankings, making it the fourth most represented country globally. Other top Indian institutions include Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (86), Vellore Institute of Technology (119), Indian Institute of Science (129), and Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (141).
Further down the list, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati ranked 166, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani at 249, and Anna University at 252. Private universities such as Chandigarh University (269) and Lovely Professional University (288) also featured prominently.
The rankings also include Indian Institute of Technology BHU Varanasi (332), Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (395), and Jadavpur University (451).
This year’s rankings underline India’s growing global competitiveness in higher education, especially led by the IITs. However, despite the breakthrough of four IITs near the top 50, sustained efforts in research output, global collaboration, and academic reputation will be key for India to push more institutions into the top tier globally.
