In an exchange during a recent hearing in Supreme Court, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud criticised a litigant for using the informal term “ya” when addressing the bench, emphasising the need for decorum in the courtroom. The incident took place today as SC was discussing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) involving former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
According to the reports CJI Chandrachud expressed his irritation after the litigant responded with “ya-ya” instead of a more formal acknowledgment. “What is this ‘ya-ya’? This is not the coffee shop. I am very allergic to this ‘ya-ya’. This cannot be allowed,” the CJI remarked, underscoring the importance of maintaining dignity and respect in judicial proceedings.
The case at hand involved a PIL that included former Chief Justice Gogoi as a party, seeking an in-house inquiry into his dismissal of a previous plea related to a service disputes.
“How can you file a PIL with a judge as a respondent? There has to be some dignity. You cannot just say you want an in-house inquiry against a judge,” CJI Chandrachud stated, highlighting that Gogoi had retired as Chief Justice of India and deserved respect for his position.
The litigant had approached the Supreme Court after his plea regarding termination under labour laws was dismissed by Justice Gogoi’s bench.
