Vijay’s London Visit Draws Opposition Fire Over Silverstone Appearance, Investment Claims

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s ongoing London visit has become a political talking point back home, with Opposition parties seeking answers about the trip’s official objectives. Vijay is in the UK for meetings aimed at attracting investment to Tamil Nadu, but his appearance alongside actor Trisha at a motorsport event at Silverstone has fuelled a debate over how much of the visit is devoted to government business.

The Chief Minister is expected to meet business representatives during his four-day stay and explore potential investment opportunities for the state.

Palaniswami takes swipe at Vijay

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned the circumstances surrounding Vijay’s visit after images from the Silverstone Circuit surfaced.

Palaniswami said he had initially backed the Chief Minister’s decision to travel abroad soon after assuming office, arguing that efforts to attract investments could benefit Tamil Nadu by creating jobs and supporting economic growth.

His tone changed after the photographs from Silverstone emerged.

“The picture is different in the media,” Palaniswami said, before taking a sarcastic dig at Vijay’s investment campaign: “See how he is attracting investments.”

The AIADMK leader has also sought information on Vijay’s official itinerary, those accompanying him and whether state funds are being used for the trip.

BJP asks: Official visit or personal trip?

BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran raised similar questions, particularly over the nature of Vijay’s London tour.

Nagendran asked whether the entire trip was being undertaken in an official capacity and sought details of the people who travelled with the Chief Minister.

“There are reports that some people have travelled with him. I don’t know who went or whom he took along,” he said.

He also questioned the number of investment meetings scheduled during the four-day stay and asked what tangible investment commitments had been secured.

According to Nagendran, Vijay should disclose the details of his meetings and the expected investments once he returns to Tamil Nadu.

Udhayanidhi attacks Vijay government

The London controversy has also prompted criticism from the ruling-opposition DMK.

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin used the issue to target Vijay over alleged problems in Tamil Nadu, including electricity shortages and law-and-order concerns.

He accused the Chief Minister of failing to provide answers on issues affecting people and alleged that the government was instead focusing on attacking the DMK leadership.

Questions over Vijay’s delegation

DMK leader TKS Elangovan separately questioned the composition of Vijay’s delegation, pointing out that the Industries Minister and Industries Department Secretary were reportedly not part of the trip.

“Neither the Industries Minister nor the Secretary has gone with him. His formal schedule was not announced. He has taken his friend from outside the government with him,” Elangovan said.

He also claimed that the London visit was unlikely to deliver investments to Tamil Nadu and questioned Vijay’s interest in the state’s development.

Silverstone visit linked to motorsport plans

Vijay’s visit to Silverstone has reportedly been connected to Tamil Nadu’s plans for a proposed Motor Sports City.

The delegation is said to have looked at the British circuit’s infrastructure, safety arrangements and commercial operations. The visit could provide inputs for the state’s proposed motorsport project.

For now, the political dispute centres on whether Vijay’s London engagements are producing the investment outcomes promised by his government.

Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have not issued an official response to the Opposition’s allegations over the visit.
