Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns citing health reasons

In a letter addressed to the President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar announced his immediate resignation from the post of Vice President, effective July 21, 2025, to prioritise his health following medical advice.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution,” he reasoned.
He also expressed gratitude to the President, Prime Minister, and Members of Parliament for their support during his tenure.
“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” the letter read.
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor,” he added.
“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” he concluded.
Dhankhar took over as the Vice President of India in August 2022.
At present, Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was appointed Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, will serve as the Acting Chairperson until a new Vice President is elected, as per the Constitution.
