A tour guide in Varanasi has gained widespread attention after a video surfaced online showing him speaking fluent Japanese with a visiting tourist, drawing praise for his linguistic ability.
The video, shared on Instagram by a Japanese traveller identified as ‘sukedaitravel’, captures his visit to the historic Munshi Ghat, where he was guided by a local man known as Deep. What set the clip apart was the guide’s remarkable command of Japanese, which he used effortlessly while explaining the surroundings and engaging in conversation.
Throughout the video, the guide is seen conversing at length in Japanese as he walks along the ghats, seamlessly combining cultural insights with personal reflections. According to translations shared in the comments, he spoke about a philosophy that emphasises detachment from material wealth and prioritising meaningful human connections.
He expressed that money holds little lasting value, as it cannot be taken beyond life, and stressed the importance of enjoying life and nurturing genuine relationships. He also encouraged the tourist to share the experience on social media, suggesting it be posted on Instagram.
The video has received a positive response online, with many viewers expressing admiration for the guide’s fluency. While some noted that his Japanese carried an Indian accent, they acknowledged that it remained clear and highly proficient.
Several users also expressed curiosity about how he acquired the language, with some suggesting that he learned it informally through interaction with a native speaker rather than formal education. Others praised his skill, with a few humorously commenting that his proficiency would allow him to watch anime without subtitles.
