US offices in India closed on Jan 9, the day of Jimmy Carter's funeral
US offices in India to remain closed on January 9 in observance of Former US President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. The 39th US President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024.
Following this, the US Embassy in India has announced the closure of US government and visa offices on Thursday.
The US Embassy India took to social media on Monday to announce the closure of its offices in India. The post stated, “All US government offices in India will be closed on January 9, including offices providing consular services.”
The post further stated, “Applicants with appointments for US citizen services or visa interviews scheduled for January have received information about rescheduling via email.”
Jimmy Carter was the longest-living US president of all time and the third US president to visit India. Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia.
He had been suffering from an aggressive form of melanoma, a skin cancer, with tumors that had spread to his liver and brain. He had stopped medical treatment and was under hospice care at home.
President Carter, a Democrat, served one term from 1977 to 1981 and was voted out of office despite achievements such as the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt. These accomplishments, however, were not enough to overcome disappointment over a struggling economy at home and the Iran hostage crisis abroad.
