US Envoy Calls J&K ‘Important Part of India’, Hints at Reviewing Travel Warning After Meeting Omar Abdullah in Srinagar

In a major endorsement of New Delhi’s territorial standing, United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” on Wednesday during his high-profile maiden visit to Srinagar. Standing alongside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after a warm bilateral meeting at the latter’s Gupkar residence, the senior diplomat also indicated that Washington would evaluate its stringent Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory currently placed on the region.

The visit marks one of the most prominent diplomatic engagements by a high-ranking American representative in the Valley in recent years. Beyond his role as the 27th US envoy to New Delhi, Gor concurrently serves as President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, giving his remarks substantial geopolitical weight across the broader region.

Washington Signalling Strategic Shift in Kashmir Assessment

Addressing reporters after his discussions with the Chief Minister, Ambassador Gor expressed enthusiasm about his first trip to the Union Territory, admiring its natural landscape while dropping hints about a potential shift in the US State Department's travel posture.

"Kashmir is an important part of India. I am visiting the place for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful place," Gor remarked, adding that the United States routinely assesses its global security warnings. While clarifying that he was not making any formal policy announcements during the interaction, he confirmed that Washington would re-examine the existing travel advisory.

The US State Department currently maintains a Level 4 warning for most parts of Jammu and Kashmir—with the exception of eastern Ladakh and Leh—citing concerns over terrorism and potential civil strife. A reassessment or easing of this warning has been a longstanding demand from regional political leadership and tourism industry stakeholders, who view the classification as a major barrier to attracting foreign tourists.

Prior to the meeting, former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti had publicly urged the envoy to pull back the advisory, noting that thousands of local families depend on international tourism for their livelihood.

'Matters Resolved by Delhi, Not Washington': Omar Abdullah’s Firm Stance

Ahead of the high-stakes diplomatic exchange, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah established a clear boundary regarding the scope of his conversation with the American delegation. Speaking to journalists during an early morning inspection of civil development projects across Srinagar, Abdullah made it unequivocal that domestic political matters would remain off-limits.

"Our problems have nothing to do with him. Neither is it my habit to take complaints to another country's ambassador," Abdullah stated. "Our problems do not have to be resolved in Washington. They have to be resolved by our own central government."

The Chief Minister reaffirmed that while he was keen to discuss economic collaboration, local stability, and regional opportunities, he would not use foreign diplomatic forums to air internal grievances. Following the sit-down, Abdullah voiced optimism that engagement between Washington and Jammu and Kashmir would widen and deepen across key socio-economic sectors over time, while acknowledging that remaining legacy issues would be handled through constitutional and administrative channels.

Broadening Bilateral and Economic Horizons

In a post shared on social media platform X, Ambassador Gor noted that his talks with Abdullah centered on exploring avenues for trade, economic partnership, and mutual growth.

The envoy's itinerary in Jammu and Kashmir comes on the heels of high-level security consultations in New Delhi, including discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on counter-terrorism, law enforcement, and border security cooperation.

Following his engagements in Srinagar, which may include a courtesy meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Ambassador Gor is scheduled to travel onward to Ladakh to continue his regional tour.
