Union Cabinet clears proposal to grant ‘Vande Mataram’ status equal to national anthem

The Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has reportedly approved a proposal to accord the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ a status equal to the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’.
The decision was taken at the first Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday following the announcement of election results in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.
As per reports, the Cabinet has approved amendments to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act to extend legal protection to ‘Vande Mataram’ on par with the national anthem.
Once implemented, any act of disrespect or obstruction during the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ would be treated as a cognisable offence, attracting penalties similar to those applicable for offences involving the national anthem, the Constitution or the national flag.
Under the existing law, individuals found guilty of preventing or disrupting the singing of the national anthem can face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both. Repeat offences may invite a minimum sentence of one year. These provisions are expected to apply to the national song following the amendment.
‘Vande Mataram’, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, played a significant role during India’s freedom movement and continues to hold cultural and historical importance.
Officials noted that the move coincides with the 150th anniversary of the composition and follows earlier legislative steps, including amendments in 2005 aimed at preventing disrespect to the national flag.
The proposed amendment is expected to be introduced in Parliament in the coming session.
