UIDAI launches revamped Aadhaar App with enhanced privacy, digital features

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched an upgraded version of the Aadhaar App, introducing more than 50 new features aimed at strengthening user privacy and promoting the shift towards a fully digital identity system.
The launch was marked by a formal programme at which UIDAI officials outlined the new facilities available on the app. The updated version allows users to hide or display personal details such as photographs, names, dates of birth, mobile numbers and even the Aadhaar number itself. It also enables users to manage the Aadhaar cards of multiple family members through a single application.
Full control in the hands of users
According to UIDAI, the new Aadhaar App gives complete control to the Aadhaar holder. Users can decide which personal details they wish to share and which they want to keep hidden. This can be done easily through selectable options within the app, allowing information to be shown or concealed as required.
When the app is opened, only a QR code is displayed by default. Full details can be accessed with a single click, adding an additional layer of privacy. The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms, and existing users are required to update their current version to access the new features.
Move towards a paperless Aadhaar
Officials said the update is expected to benefit millions of citizens who use Aadhaar regularly for government services and personal identification. The primary objective of the upgrade is to transition Aadhaar from a paper-based document to a secure digital identity.
The new features are designed to enable faster identity verification, enhance data security and allow immediate use at various locations. UIDAI said the changes would not only save time but also significantly reduce the risk of identity fraud and unauthorised photocopying of Aadhaar documents.
Key features of the new Aadhaar App
- Digital identity: Users no longer need to carry a physical Aadhaar card or photocopy. The Aadhaar shown on the app will be considered valid for identification at places such as hotels and guest houses.
- QR code-based verification: Identity can be verified instantly by scanning a QR code displayed on the app.
- Online updates: Users can update their residential address and mobile number directly through the app, reducing the need to visit government offices.
- Online Aadhaar verification: Identity can be confirmed without sharing the Aadhaar number.
- Biometric lock: Users can manually lock their biometric data to prevent unauthorised use of fingerprints, facial recognition or iris scans.
- Authentication history: The app allows users to check past Aadhaar authentication records.
- Multilingual access: The app is available in 13 Indian languages.
How to update mobile number or address
To update personal details through the app, users need to log in and access the Aadhaar details update section on the home screen. After entering the new mobile number or address and completing the verification process, a fee of ₹75 must be paid. Once verified, the updated information will be reflected in the Aadhaar records.
