During the festival season, India sees a huge surge in train travellers, eager to return to their hometowns. Two trains in Uttar Pradesh went up in flames 8 kms apart within 12 hours.
Both trains started off from Delhi were and Bihar-bound. Many passengers onboard are reported to have sustained injuries.
Fire in Delhi - Saharsa Vaishali Express
It was the Delhi-Saharsa Vaishali Express (12554) that first caught fire in the wee hours today when the train was reportedly halted before UP’s Mainpuri junction at around 2.15 a.m. Fire brigade officials were called to the scene to extinguish the fire.
Around 19 passengers are reported to have sustained injuries, with 11 having burn injuries in this incident. All of the injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.
As per reports, the train’s S6 coach, next to the pantry car, caught fire and was lit up in smoke. The coach was then reportedly detached from the train, and it resumed journey at around 6 a.m.
Delhi Darbhanga Express up in flames
In a similar incident, the Delhi-Darbhanga Clone special train caught fire in UP’s Etawah at around 7 p.m. on Nov 15, nearly 8 kms away from where the Vaishali Express would catch fire in a few hours.
The train’s S1 to S3 coaches caught fire, and reportedly at least eight sustained minor injuries in this accident. Short circuit is suspected to be the cause, say some reports.
The fire department carried out an operation for two hours, and the three coaches were detached. The train then continued its journey.
