Two suicides in a week at Atal setu bridge

A 52-year-old businessman, Philip Shah, ended his life by jumping off the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, on October 2. This was the second suicide on the bridge in just three days, following a similar incident involving a banker on September 30.
Shah, a resident of Matunga in central Mumbai, reportedly drove his sedan onto the bridge, parked it, and then jumped into the sea. His identity was confirmed through his Aadhaar card found in the car. According to the reports, Shah had been under mental stress for many days leading up to his death as per his wife’s statement to the media.
The CCTV control room staff had noticed the parked car and alerted a rescue team, which quickly arrived at the scene. Shah was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. The Nhava Sheva police station has registered a case of accidental death.
In a similar incident on September 30, a man reportedly jumped off the same bridge around 10 am. Authorities were alerted by a passerby, and search operations were initiated by the Sewri police and coastal police teams.
The Atal Setu was inaugurated in January this year. Just three months after its inauguration, a 43-year-old doctor had jumped off the bridge, leaving a suicide note for her father.
